Max Mousseron Institute of Biomolecules (IBMM)
Content type: Page
The IBMM conducts research on biomolecules (lipids, sugars, proteins, and DNA/RNA), which are the building blocks of life. This research at the intersection of chemistry and biology contributes to a better understanding of physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms, as well as to the development of innovative tools for healthcare: new, more effective treatments (for cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases), new medical devices, new approaches in cosmetology, and new diagnostic systems. The expertise of the IBMM teams covers: the design via molecular modeling and the synthesis of biomolecules and derivatives using more efficient, environmentally friendly methods; the development of analytical methods for characterizing biomolecules and their analysis in biological environments; in vitro pharmacological, toxicological, and biological studies of these biomolecules to validate their properties and select the most promising ones to enable their development into new therapeutic and diagnostic systems and devices; The IBMM’s expertise makes it a unique laboratory for commercializing its research, which has notably led to the market launch of two drugs (Macrilen, Sébivo) and the creation of several companies. Immersion within the IBMM provides a unique training opportunity for students wishing to tackle the future challenges of life sciences. The Bacterial Virulence and Chronic Infections Laboratory (VBIC) (University of Montpellier, INSERM) was established on January 1, 2011, and is located at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in Nîmes. Since January 2023, the "Staphylococcal Infection Biology Project Team," located at the Triolet Campus in Montpellier, has joined the VBIC. We take a "bench-to-bedside" approach, using basic and translational research to address clinically relevant problems. Through close collaboration between basic scientists, clinicians, and biologists at the Nîmes University Hospital, we use integrative and multidisciplinary approaches to understand the cellular and molecular basis of host-pathogen interactions and microbial interactions in chronic wounds, and to apply our findings in clinical practice. We are also the National Reference Center for Brucellosis. We focus on the following conditions: Brucellosis; Opportunistic infections caused by the Burkholderia cepacia complex; Chronic wound infections; Staphylococcal infections.
