Pix Certification

This certification is a digital skills certificate based on a European framework (DigComp) and is becoming the standard for digital skills in higher education and all professional and social contexts. Its goal is to help raise the overall level of digital knowledge and skills, thereby preparing for the digital transformation of our entire society and economy.

The Faculty of Sciences in Montpellier offers an optional "certification track" that leads to an official certification that is reliable and recognized by the French Ministry of Education, higher education institutions, and the professional world, including at the European level.

Certification at the various units of the University of Montpellier is free of charge, except for continuing education and apprenticeship programs. It is administered within each unit under the supervision of a designated faculty member.

Caesura

A study break allows a student enrolled in an undergraduate program in higher education to temporarily suspend their studies in order to gain enriching personal or professional experience. This break may be taken independently or through a host organization, either in France or abroad.

It can be undertaken at various points during one’s academic career, from the first year of undergraduate studies through the final year of graduate studies. It lasts at least one semester and can extend up to a full academic year.

Several types of projects may warrant a request for a gap year:

  • Take a course in a field other than your current major to explore new academic horizons;
  • Participate in a civic service program or volunteer work, in France or abroad (traditional civic service, European Voluntary Service, etc.);
  • Start your own business under the student-entrepreneur program;
  • Undertake a meaningful personal project on your own;
  • Gain professional experience through a fixed-term employment contract (CDD), volunteer work, or an internship agreement.

A few things to know before applying for a gap year

If your gap year plan includes an internship, please note: your application will only be accepted for a single internship, lasting no more than 6 months, as part of a gap year semester.

In addition, the gap year must align with the academic calendar:

  • it cannot begin before September 1 (the official start of the academic year) and cannot extend beyond August 31 (the end of the academic year),
  • You must be enrolled in a university program before submitting your application.
  • The break must end no later than the final semester of the program, regardless of the program’s duration.

Are you thinking about taking a gap year?

Submit a request to the office where you are enrolled. You will be asked to provide a form, a gap-year agreement, and the necessary supporting documents.

TIMELINE FOR REQUESTING A LEAVE OF ABSENCE

  • Annual break or first-semester break in France: no later than September 15
  • Annual leave or study abroad in the first semester: by September 1 at the latest
  • Application deadline for a gap year during the second semester in France or abroad: December 15 at the latest

Tutoring

Tutoring is a support program designed to help students succeed, established by the University of Montpellier.

Free of charge, the tutoring program provides academic and personal support to students throughout the year. It fosters a true partnership between students and faculty, allowing students to apply their knowledge in practice through sessions organized by tutors.

Tutors are upperclassmen who are either currently enrolled in a training program (trainee tutors) or have completed a specific “Tutor Certification” program (certified tutors).

For students, by students, and supervised by teachers, tutoring takes many forms:

  • Subject-specific tutoring focuses on courses within the institution’s academic programs. Sessions take the form of practice exams, such as mock exams for PACES students, or writing legal analyses of court decisions or working through practical case studies for law tutoring.
  • Information literacy instruction helps students develop skills in conducting research and using digital tools to access and make use of resources that are useful for their academic journey.
  • The disability support program provides personalized assistance to PASS students with recognized disabilities by adapting teaching methods.
  • Tutoring as part of the tailored academic tracks is available to students enrolled in the "Oui Si" academic success program. This form of tutoring focuses on study skills and academic support.

Would you like to participate in the tutoring sessions?

To do so, you must be enrolled in an undergraduate program at the University of Montpellier. You can find all the information regarding tutoring sessions at your faculty, school, or institute.

Are you interested in becoming a tutor?

If you are enrolled at the University of Montpellier in a degree program, you may apply to the relevant tutoring coordinator. To do so, you will need to submit a cover letter, a resume, and specify the type of tutoring you wish to provide. You may be asked to attend an interview.

If your application is approved, you will need to enroll as a trainee tutor in the “Training for Qualified Tutor” program, either as part of a course unit or as part of the “Training for Qualified Tutor” university diploma. You will then receive training and complete an internship.
