The University of Montpellier fosters innovation within its laboratories and develops innovative solutions that benefit humanity and the environment through Research conducted by its researchers. From technology and medicine to environmental engineering and the social sciences, the University of Montpellier promotes the scientific work of its researchers by giving it economic and societal value directly linked to the challenges facing the industrial world. The commercialization of research stimulates scientific innovation and enables an impact on society and the socio-economic sphere. This encourages cooperation between laboratories and external partners and also helps generate new sources of revenue. Pathways to Commercialization Several pathways to commercialization are available for researchers wishing to apply their research to the socio-economic sphere: Technology transfer to an academic or industrial partner Provisions of the Innovation Act (participation in business creation and the activities of existing companies, scientific competitions, participation in governance bodies, etc.) Technology transfer Technology transfer facilitates the market entry of solutions derived from research. To this end, the University of Montpellier formalizes this transfer by establishing several types of commercialization contracts, such as: Joint ownership agreements License agreements Assignment of rights agreements Good to know The University of Montpellier ranks among the top patent filers Filing a patent is one of the steps in commercialization that can subsequently lead to an exploitation license or an assignment of rights agreement. It serves to protect, negotiate, and generate financial resources from an innovation resulting from the work carried out by our scientific community. In 2022, the University of Montpellier was ranked among the top 50 patent applicants with the INPI, effectively placing it among the top 10 higher education institutions in France in terms of the number of patents filed. The University of Montpellier has a subsidiary dedicated to accelerating technology transfer. The University of Montpellier has also established a commercialization subsidiary, the technology transfer acceleration company: SATT AxLR. This subsidiary has an investment fund designed to support research teams in maturing their projects and developing innovations aligned with market needs. It also provides access to the University of Montpellier’s intellectual property rights for the technologies it manages.
