What sets the TransVIHMI UMI apart is its multidisciplinary approach, whose primary initial objective is to study the specific characteristics of HIV and associated diseases—particularly tuberculosis—from epidemiological, virological, bacteriological, parasitological, clinical, and social perspectives. The unit has expanded its focus to include non-HIV infections—no longer limited to the context of HIV co-infection—as well as neglected and emerging tropical diseases. Consequently, more recent work has led to the development of a new research-intervention focus within the context of responding to epidemics (EBOLA).
