Temporary Teaching and Research Research s (ATER)

The University of Montpellier encompasses 33 CNU departments and recruits Temporary Teaching and Research s (ATERS) to carry out teaching and university research duties. They also fulfill the various obligations associated with their teaching activities, including student advising, assessment, and exams. Information regarding the status of ATERs and the terms of employment is available on the website of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research.

Two recruitment drives are held each year:

  • A major campaign across 33 CNU sections, with nominations due in February and new officers taking office at the start of the academic year in September.
  • An additional recruitment drive has been launched to address staffing needs in certain CNU divisions. The positions are scheduled to begin on November1.

Temporary Teaching Assistants (ATE)

Each year, the University of Montpellier hires Temporary Teaching Assistants (ATE) to carry out teaching duties in accordance with Articles L.954-3 and L.952-6-1 of the Education Code.

The duration of the first contract is a maximum of 12 months. The teaching load is 384 hours of tutorial equivalents for a 12-month full-time position.

Foreign-Language Readers

Each year, the University of Montpellier recruits foreign language instructors to provide language instruction to students. The foreign language for which candidates apply must be their native language or another language they are fluent in to the same degree as their native language.

Part-time instructors

The recruitment of part-time faculty members is carried out by the university president upon the recommendation of the directors of the academic departments. The terms of employment are defined by Decree No. 1987-889 of October 29, 1987, concerning the terms of recruitment and employment of part-time faculty members in higher education.

Application Guidelines:

The responsibility for hiring adjunct instructors based on pedagogical criteria lies with the University’s academic departments, institutes, and schools (academic units).

The steps are as follows:

The adjunct instructor contacts an academic and/or administrative official at a University department to be assigned teaching duties;

  1. Submit the administrative application through the OSE* application only if the academic recruitment has been approved by one or more academic units of the University of Montpellier;
  2. Initial validation by the component;
  3. Final approval by the Teaching Resources Management Office of the Human Resources Department. This approval allows the activities to begin;
  4. Once the administrative file has been approved: signing of an employment contract for the academic year prepared by the Office of Educational Resources Management (BGME).

The submission of the complete administrative application and its final approval by the BGME must occur before classes begin. This application must be renewed for each academic year.

Employment Requirements:

Adjunct instructors (CEVs) are individuals selected for their expertise in a particular field who also have a primary occupation. They may teach lectures, tutorials, or lab sessions, up to a maximum of 187 tutorial-equivalent hours per academic year, across all academic programs.

Categories of part-time instructors:

  • Private-sector employee;
  • Self-employed individuals, independent professionals, and sole proprietors;
  • Business executive;
  • BIATSS staff at the University of Montpellier (tenured or contract employees);
  • Permanent or non-permanent civil service employees from other institutions;
  • Contract-based doctoral students;
  • Freelance entertainment workers, artists, and authors.

Temporary part-time instructors (ATV) may teach a maximum of 96 hours equivalent to teaching duty per year at one or more institutions, but they may not teach lectures (CM).

Categories of temporary staff:

  • A graduate student pursuing apostgraduate degree;
  • Retired from a primary occupation outside the University of Montpellier.

People who cannot be hired:

  • Individuals who do not have a primary occupation as of September 1 of the academic year
  • Professors s on Leave for Research or Thematic Conversions (CRCT)
  • Temporary Teaching and Research Assistants ( Research , or ATER)
  • People who have reached the age limit of 67
  • Retirees from the University of Montpellier

Preparing the application package:

Once recruitment has been confirmed by the response unit, an application must be submitted through the OSE* recruitment application.

The documents that must be provided in all professional situations are as follows:

  • Health Insurance Card or Social Security Certificate
  • Bank account information held in a personal capacity
